Thanks to new standards issued by the GSM Association, messages exchanged through iPhones and Android devices will soon have the benefit of end-to-end encryption (E2EE). This is a game changer for those who value their privacy when sending messages.
The Rich Communication Services (RCS) protocol, which has been around for a while, is finally getting the upgrade it needs. RCS aimed to make SMS cross-platform communications richer and more feature-packed, including functions like group chats and read receipts.
Although many Android manufacturers have embraced RCS over the years, Apple has lagged behind until now. With the recent introduction of iOS 18, Apple users can finally hop on the RCS train!
So, what’s the big deal about E2EE? Simply put, it means that only the sender and receiver can read a message. This ensures that no unwanted snoopers can access your private conversations—a major win for user privacy.
Companies like Apple have been offering E2EE since launching iMessage. However, this has always been limited to iOS devices. Similarly, while WhatsApp introduced E2EE in 2016, it only applied within its platform. The challenge was to enable secure messaging across different platforms—something that RCS, with the addition of E2EE, is tackling head-on.
The new RCS Universal Profile 3.0 will facilitate secure, interoperable messaging, allowing data to flow safely between Android and iPhone users. As GSMA’s technical director noted, RCS is poised to be the first large-scale service to support this level of security.
