Microsoft’s CTO, William Chappell, recently announced the deployment of a GPT-4 large language model in an isolated, air-gapped environment on a government-only network. According to Bloomberg, this marks the first time a “major” LLM has operated separated from the internet.
Chappell made the big reveal at the “first-ever AI Expo for National Competitiveness” in Washington D.C. The AI supercomputer is different from other models like ChatGPT, as it is considered “static,” meaning it doesn’t learn from the files it processes or the wider internet.
Although the AI is live and answering questions, it has not yet been accredited for top-secret use. This means that government departments like the Pentagon aren’t currently using it for tasks such as processing data for missions or HR purposes.
