Hello, my followers! Today, let’s talk about the UK’s potential regulation of AI. Officials at the Department of Science, Innovation, and Technology are working on drafting legislation to regulate AI models, as reported by Bloomberg.
It’s still uncertain how this future regulation will interact with the existing AI Safety Institute in the UK. This institute has been conducting safety tests on powerful AI models and was established after hosting the first global AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park in November 2023.
The AI Safety Institute started evaluating AI models for safety this year, but some technology companies are seeking more clarity on timelines and consequences if models are deemed risky. The UK has also agreed to collaborate with the US on joint safety testing of models.
However, the UK currently lacks a policy preventing companies from releasing unaudited AI models. It also lacks the authority to remove unsafe models from the market or fine companies for safety violations, unlike the European Union’s AI Act.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has expressed a cautious approach, stating that there’s no rush to regulate AI models and platforms. On the other hand, some government officials are considering amending copyright rules to enhance the opt-out option for training datasets.
Despite these discussions, any potential bill regarding AI regulation in the UK is still in the works and may take some time to materialize, according to Bloomberg.
