Waymo can now operate its self-driving robotaxis on highways in parts of Los Angeles and the Bay Area after receiving approval from California regulators. This means that Waymo’s cars will be able to travel at speeds of up to 65mph on local roads and highways in approved areas.
In a statement to The Washington Post, Waymo spokesperson Julia Ilina mentioned that the company’s expansion will be done carefully and incrementally. She also stated that there are no immediate plans to extend the service to highways at this time.
Last month, the California Public Utilities Commission had put a hold on Waymo’s expansion plans for further review. However, after evaluating Waymo’s technology, safety practices, and operations involving humans, CPUC concluded that the company is ready to start its expansion immediately.
