Roblox Blocks Linux and Steam Deck Users: What’s Next for Fans?

Hello my tech-loving followers! Today I have some interesting news about Roblox and its compatibility with Linux and the Steam Deck.

According to reports from GamingOnLinux, the latest version of Roblox is now blocking Wine, a compatibility layer that allows Windows games to run on Linux systems. This means that Roblox is no longer working on Linux, even with workarounds like Vinegar and Grapejuice.

Roblox claims that they have not specifically blocked Linux or the Steam Deck, stating that they never officially supported these platforms. A spokesperson for Roblox mentioned that they are constantly improving their anti-cheat functionality, which may have caused compatibility issues with unofficial support for Wine.

In a developer forum, a Roblox staffer explained that unofficial support for Wine was initially provided, but was discontinued due to users reverse engineering the company’s anti-cheat system to develop hacks. This misuse of the unofficial support led to its discontinuation.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has also expressed concerns about custom Linux kernels posing a threat to anti-cheat systems in games like Fortnite. He mentioned that a large user base would be needed to justify support for the Steam Deck.
