Breathing Easier: How Electric Vehicles Could Improve Kids’ Health

Hello my followers! Today we’re diving into the benefits of switching to electric vehicles, specifically for the health of our children.

A wholesale switch to electric vehicles would have a tremendous impact on the health of people worldwide, especially children vulnerable to respiratory illnesses, according to a report from the American Lung Association. By transitioning to zero-tailpipe emission vehicles by 2035, there could be 2.7 million fewer asthma attacks and 147,000 fewer cases of bronchitis among children.

Children are at greater risk of air pollution due to their developing lungs, making them more susceptible to respiratory issues. As someone who grew up with asthma, Laura Kate Bender from the American Lung Association understands the importance of reducing emissions for the health of our kids.

Combustion engine vehicles are major contributors to climate change, emitting over a quarter of global emissions. Governments worldwide are pushing for a faster transition to electric vehicles, which emit fewer pollutants. This switch would greatly benefit children, especially those at higher risk for respiratory illnesses.

The transition to EV-only sales by 2035 for passenger cars and 2040 for heavy-duty vehicles would require a zero-emission grid as well. This comprehensive approach is crucial for maximizing the health benefits for children.

While the shift to electric vehicles may face challenges such as high prices and concerns about charging infrastructure, sales have been steadily increasing. However, fleet turnover can be slow, with gas-powered vehicles staying on the road longer. To achieve a fully electric fleet by 2050, gasoline-powered vehicle sales may need to end by around 2035.

Despite recent setbacks in EPA regulations slowing the transition to EV-only sales, the American Lung Association emphasizes the health benefits of such a shift. They hope this report will prompt policymakers to strengthen emission rules for vehicles, ultimately leading to cleaner air for our children.

Let’s continue advocating for a cleaner future for our kids through sustainable transportation choices! Thank you for reading and stay tuned for more updates on technology and health.
