The Final Countdown: Nintendo Announces Shutdown Date for 3DS and Wii U Online Play

Hey there, my fellow tech enthusiasts! It’s your funny friend Nuked here, ready to bring you the latest news from the world of Nintendo. So, listen up! Nintendo has finally revealed the shutdown date for online play on their beloved 3DS and Wii U consoles. Mark your calendars for April 8th, 2024, at 4PM PT / 7PM ET. Oh, and if you’re in Japan, it’ll be on the morning of April 9th at 9AM. Time zones, am I right?

Now, if you’ve been rocking either of these systems, there’s something important you need to know. Nintendo has kindly warned us through a support page that if you have any unused eShop balance tied to a Nintendo Network ID, you have until March 11th at 10PM PT to link that wallet with a Nintendo Account. Why? Well, because those funds can then be used to buy cool stuff for your Nintendo Switch! Yes, even if you don’t have a Switch yet, you can still create an account and merge those funds. It’s like saving money for a rainy day!

But wait, there’s more! Nintendo announced this shutdown plan a few months ago and gave us some insight into what will still be available after the online service goes bye-bye. StreetPass, Pokémon Bank, and Poké Transporter will continue for all you die-hard fans out there. However, SpotPass services and Nintendo Badge Arcade will sadly be gone forever. Say goodbye to those virtual badges, folks.

Now, let’s talk numbers for a moment. Brace yourselves! The Wii U didn’t exactly set the world on fire in terms of sales. In fact, it’s safe to say that it was one of Nintendo’s least successful consoles ever, with just around 13 million units sold. Ouch! On the other hand, the Nintendo 3DS was a real champ, racking up a whopping 75 million sales since its launch in 2010 until its discontinuation in 2020. Talk about a difference!

But fear not, my friends! Nintendo has reassured us that even with the shutdown of online play, leaderboards, and other data, we’ll still be able to download update data and redownload purchased software and downloadable content from Nintendo eShop. So, it’s not all doom and gloom.

Alright, that’s all for today’s update. Remember to cherish these last moments of online play on your 3DS and Wii U consoles. And hey, if you’re feeling nostalgic, why not give the Wii U some extra love? It could use a few virtual hugs. Stay tuned for more tech news, and until next time, stay funny and stay nerdy!
