So, it seems that Google’s post-pandemic reckoning has affected more than just their hardware team. In addition to the layoffs in the Google Hardware team responsible for Pixel, Nest, and Fitbit products, they have also made cuts in their core engineering and Google Assistant teams. The Verge recently confirmed with Google that “a few hundred” roles have been eliminated in each of these divisions. If we use a reasonable definition of “few,” this means that around a thousand employees have been laid off on Wednesday alone.
Now, these are just the cuts that have been officially confirmed. We reached out to Google for more information, but unfortunately, they stopped replying after confirming the existing layoff reports at 9to5Google and Semafor. However, The New York Times has also reported on the layoffs in the engineering team. So, it’s safe to say that there might be more cuts happening that we’re unaware of.
When we spoke to Google spokesperson Courtenay Mencini about the hardware layoffs earlier, she didn’t mention the other layoffs but did mention that several teams at Google are making changes to become more efficient. This includes some role eliminations globally. This suggests that Google might be spreading out the bad news instead of having it all hit at once.
Now, here’s an interesting tidbit for you. During the Epic v. Google trial, it was revealed that Google is one of those companies that tries to shape the news by planting stories. It’s quite fascinating to see how 9to5Google and Semafor both wrote scoops about the hardware layoffs and knowledge team layoffs, respectively, without mentioning the other. Speaking of the bigger picture, let’s talk numbers. Google is a massive company, with parent firm Alphabet employing a whopping 182,381 employees as of September 30th, 2023. So, if we consider the layoffs to be around a thousand, it would only account for about half a percent of the company’s total workforce.
