Whether you’re using Reddit’s iOS or Android apps, or even browsing the web while logged out, you’ll be able to read posts in English, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, and Swedish. How cool is that?
Curious to see how this translation feature works, I decided to give it a try. I went over to r/France and found a post written in French. When I logged out on the web, a “Translate” link magically appeared at the top left of the post. With just a click, voila! The post was now in English. Even on the iOS app, I still had access to the “Translate” link. Talk about convenience!
Now, I must admit that I don’t speak French, so I can’t vouch for the accuracy of Reddit’s translation. However, the English version seemed perfectly fine to me. According to a comment from the admin, Reddit is currently using “Google services for translations in a manner consistent with our privacy policy.” So they’ve got that covered.
But here’s the catch – you can’t read fully translated threads just yet. Reddit is currently experimenting with translating comments under posts, and only on iOS and Android. However, fear not! Reddit has big plans in mind. The admin mentioned that soon we’ll be able to have our entire conversation experience on Reddit in multiple languages. How awesome is that?
Now, let’s shift gears for a moment and talk about Reddit’s upcoming changes. The admin reminds us that the previous coins system will soon be deprecated. This means that you won’t be able to thank someone for giving you gold using coins anymore. The deadline for coins to work is Tuesday, September 12th. Oh, and by the way, Reddit has already removed the ability to give awards on the Old Reddit design and on the “mobile desktop experience” (which I assume means mobile web). So, if you’re a fan of giving awards, you might want to take note of that.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Reddit has promised that a new awards system will be introduced in the future, but they’re keeping the details under wraps for now. However, Android Authority stumbled upon some evidence in Reddit’s Android app. It seems that the new system might allow users to convert gold or Reddit karma into real money. Hmm, I’m not sure if that’s an ideal replacement, but we’ll have to wait and see.
