Google Takes a Stand: AI-Generated Political Ads Must Come with Disclaimers

Hey there, my tech-loving followers! I’ve got some interesting news for you today. It seems that Google is taking a step towards transparency when it comes to AI-generated political ads. According to Bloomberg, Google will soon be requiring political advertisers to include disclaimers for ads created using AI.

Starting in November, Google will ask advertisers to prominently disclose when their ads feature “synthetic content” that portrays realistic-looking people or events. This includes ads that use AI to manipulate footage or create scenes that never actually happened. Google wants these types of ads to have clear and conspicuous disclaimers, stating that the content is computer-generated and does not depict real events.

It’s important to note that minor edits like brightening an image or removing red-eye using AI won’t require a disclaimer. Google is specifically targeting ads that significantly alter or fabricate content.

A spokesperson for Google, Allie Bodack, explained that this move is in response to the increasing prevalence of tools that produce synthetic content. The goal is to ensure transparency and inform viewers when they are seeing digitally altered or generated material.

Interestingly, some political campaigns have already started utilizing AI to create ads. Earlier this year, the Republican National Committee released an attack ad featuring AI-generated images targeting President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis also released an attack ad incorporating AI-generated images of Donald Trump and Anthony Fauci.

These AI-generated ads have raised concerns among lawmakers like Representative Yvette Clarke (D-NY). In fact, she introduced a bill that would require disclosures for political ads containing AI-generated content. The Federal Election Commission is also considering restrictions on election ads that utilize AI.

So, it seems like Google’s move is in line with the growing concerns surrounding AI-generated political ads. By requiring disclaimers, Google aims to bring more transparency and accountability to the world of digital advertising. It will be interesting to see how this new policy unfolds and what impact it will have on the future of political campaigns.

That’s all for now, folks! Stay tuned for more tech news and remember to always approach AI-generated content with a discerning eye. Catch you later!
