In a recent Reddit AMA, Huffman was met with universal anger and criticism. Subreddit moderators and third-party app developers have lost trust in Huffman and Reddit’s leadership, accusing them of lying and inappropriate responses.

Most of the protesting subreddits have pledged to go private for 48 hours, while some plan to remain private indefinitely. The protests will end when Reddit addresses issues with the API, improves accessibility for blind people, and creates parity in access to NSFW content.

The complaints stem from Reddit’s lack of communication about the changes to its API pricing and incoming restrictions, including prohibiting third-party apps from showing NSFW content. The community feels that Reddit’s leadership has not been keeping dialogue open with impacted third-party developers.

Since the AMA, some subreddits have escalated their response, with r/iPhone and r/Music both going private indefinitely. Nearly 4,500 communities are pledging to go dark, according to a pinned bot post on the r/ModCoord sub’s post about the protest.
