It looks like Elon Musk’s brain-computer interface company, Neuralink, has just received the green light from the FDA to launch its first in-human clinical study. That’s right, folks, actual humans could soon be getting devices from Neuralink implanted in their heads.
The announcement of a future human trial is definitely exciting news, but the real milestone will be the results of that trial. This is Elon Musk we’re talking about, after all – the man who always manages to push boundaries and make headlines. It makes us wonder who would actually sign up for such a thing and why. Would it be someone with an important medical reason, or someone who just wants to draw attention to themselves alongside Musk? And is there any chance that Musk himself will be the first person to get the device implanted in his own head? He has claimed that he will at some point in the future.
However, it’s worth noting that Neuralink has faced accusations of abusing its monkey test subjects, which the company denies. Additionally, it’s currently under investigation for allegedly transporting contaminated devices removed from monkeys. The FDA even rejected an early 2022 Neuralink application for human trials, outlining “dozens of issues” that needed to be addressed.
It’s also worth mentioning that Musk’s Neuralink won’t be the first company to implant a brain-computer interface in a human. Synchron was approved by the FDA to begin US trials in 2021 and announced the first US brain-computer implant last July. In fact, it even published the results of an earlier study of four human patients in Australia this January.
Now, if you’re thinking about signing up for the Neuralink trial yourself, unfortunately there’s nothing you can do just yet. Neuralink says that recruitment isn’t open yet and that it will announce more information “soon.”
