The co-founder of Pluto TV, Ilya Pozin, is reportedly working on a new company called Teevee Corporation that will give away free ad-supported TVs. But here’s the catch: the TV will come with a second built-in screen that displays ads and widgets. Instead of making money from TV sales, Teevee Corporation will profit from the ads that appear on the secondary screen.
Now, before you dismiss this idea as ridiculous, consider that Vizio already makes more money from ads and commissions than it does from selling TVs. According to sources, the built-in screen will be about the same height as a smartphone and stretch across the entire width of the TV. It will display ads and also come with widgets that show weather, news headlines, and sports scores from major leagues.
But don’t expect this TV to be a smart TV. It will bundle existing streaming dongles like Roku and Amazon instead. It’s unclear how far along this product is, but a suspected website for the device claims it’s “the biggest thing to happen to TV since color” and is coming in 2023. Teevee Corporation’s site also hints that something is “coming later this year.”
This project is a testament to the trend of bundling ads and streaming. As more people turn to free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) services to offset the costs of paid streaming subscriptions, Pozin could be ready to capitalize on that shift. The future of streaming is ads, and Pozin knows it.
