Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook (which owns WhatsApp), has announced a new tweak to the burn-after-reading feature. Now, recipients can choose to keep a message if the sender consents. This means that disappearing messages are now more optional than ever before.
WhatsApp has dubbed this new adjustment as a “sender superpower,” and it’s designed to keep the sender in control of what ultimately happens to their message. If a recipient tries to save a message, the sender will receive a notification and can choose whether it should disappear or be saved.
This gives senders the ability to “veto” a recipient’s attempt to save a message. According to WhatsApp’s blog post, “If you’ve decided your message can’t be kept by others, your decision is final, no one else can keep it, and the message will be deleted when the timer expires.”
If you do decide to save a message that you received and the sender is okay with it, you’ll see a bookmark icon on it. You can then access these saved messages in your kept messages folder.
