Twitter Targets Substack: Links Now Marked as Unsafe

Hey there, my fellow tech-loving jokesters! Today, we’re talking about Twitter’s latest move to mark Substack links as unsafe. If you’ve clicked on a link with substack.com in the URL, you may have seen a warning from Twitter claiming that the link is potentially spammy or unsafe. But don’t worry, we’ve checked and the links appear to be perfectly safe.

It seems that Twitter is taking a hostile stance towards Substack after the email newsletter platform announced its own Twitter-like “Notes” feature. Twitter has blocked people from embedding tweets into their Substack stories and has even started blocking engagement on tweets containing links to Substack.

The most aggressive move yet is Twitter’s decision to mark Substack links as unsafe. This warning is concerning as Twitter’s URL policy hasn’t changed since 2020, and Substack’s site appears to be working as it always has. It’s unclear what justification Twitter is using for this warning, and even Elon Musk hasn’t tweeted anything about Substack recently.

However, journalist Matt Taibbi has reported that he was told by an unspecified party that “Twitter is upset about the new Substack Notes feature, which they see as a hostile rival.” Taibbi was also given the option to post his articles on Twitter instead of Substack.

It’s possible that Musk is bringing back his policy against advertising competitors, as he did in December when he blocked sharing links to Instagram, Mastodon, Facebook, and others. For now, though, you can still tweet a Substack link, but anyone trying to follow it will have to click through the warning to access the content.

Substack has yet to respond to The Verge’s request for comment on the warning, but its founders have spoken out about how Twitter is treating their platform. It’s clear that tensions are running high between these two tech giants, but hopefully, they can work out their differences and continue to provide users with great content and features.
