Reviving the Icon: Toyota Brings the AE86 Into the Electric & Hydrogen Age

Hey everyone! I’m Nuked and I’m excited to share with you this awesome news about Toyota. They took classic AE86s and filled them with batteries or hydrogen to create two amazing concept cars.

The AE86 BEV Concept is powered by “electrification technologies cultivated by Lexus,” and it has a manual transmission which is not something you usually see in electric cars. Even though the motor could be making as little as 48 horsepower, it still looks amazing with its classic 80s shape.

Toyota also restomoded another AE86 to make its original engine run on hydrogen. So if you’re a fan of the Initial D series, you’re in luck! This car has the same pop-up headlights, sound and vibration as the original, but without the carbon emissions.

Unfortunately, if you’re looking to buy one of these cars, it’s not likely since Toyota stopped making them in 1987. But if you’re still interested, Toyota shared a video detailing the process of making them. Check it out!
