Arlo Security Cameras: Features You Paid For Disappearing in New End-of-Life Policy

Hey there fellow tech enthusiasts! It’s your favorite tech writer, Nuked, here to bring you the latest update on home security camera company Arlo. As you may have heard, Arlo is taking away certain features from its cameras that many of us paid for. Talk about a bummer, right?

So what exactly is happening? Well, it looks like Arlo is eliminating the seven days of free cloud storage that was previously offered with many of its cameras. This change is set to take effect on January 1, 2024 for certain models, and the company is even reserving the right to remove all cloud functionality, including email alerts and push notifications, for any camera that hasn’t been manufactured in the past four years.

This news comes in the form of a new “End-Of-Life Policy” that is retroactive for some cameras. Here’s a breakdown of the policy:

  • If you have an Arlo Gen 3 or Arlo Pro, there are no guarantees after April 1, 2023
  • If you have an Arlo Baby, Arlo Pro 2, Arlo Q, Arlo Q+, Arlo Lights, or Audio Doorbell, there are no guarantees after January 1, 2024
  • Email notifications and E911 emergency calling are gone after April 1, 2023
  • “Legacy Video Storage” with AWS S3 is gone after January 1, 2024

According to emails sent to Arlo users (via 9to5Google), you can still “live stream video, receive motion notifications, and store video clips locally with a compatible Arlo base station.” However, it’s not clear if this means the base station is required for all live streaming, or just for local storage.
