Reddit Takes Control: r/malefashionadvice Surrenders to API Pricing Changes

Hey there, my tech-loving followers! It’s your funny guy, Nuked, here to share some interesting news from the world of Reddit. So, let’s dive right into it!

Recently, there has been quite a buzz surrounding one of Reddit’s biggest protesting subreddits, r/malefashionadvice. This community, with over 5 million subscribers, had decided to go private in protest of the platform’s API pricing changes. However, things have taken an unexpected turn.

The good news is that r/malefashionadvice is now open again! Reddit has taken charge of the subreddit, allowing users to browse its content once more. However, there’s a catch – the subreddit is in restricted mode, meaning only certain users can make new posts.

Last week, the moderators of r/malefashionadvice made the decision to take their community private and encourage users to join platforms like Discord and Substack instead. They expected to be replaced by Reddit admins if they didn’t reopen. And guess what? That’s exactly what happened!

Three former moderators of r/malefashionadvice confirmed that they were removed from the subreddit last Thursday. It seems they were anticipating this move for a few days prior. Currently, the subreddit only has one moderator: ModCodeofConduct.

Despite its restricted status, someone managed to make a post on Thursday urging community members to join the Discord. It appears that the Discord is gaining traction, with one former mod stating that it now has around 5,000 users.

When contacted for comment, Reddit did not respond immediately. In addition to r/malefashionadvice, ModCodeofConduct is also the sole moderator of several other subreddits like r/ShittyLifeProTips, r/AccidentalRenaissance, r/oldbabies, r/BeardAdvice, r/plumbingporn, and r/fordtransit.

Now, according to the Reddark tracker, the largest subreddit still private is r/streetwear. With over 4 million subscribers, this community is also moderated by Zach, who mentioned last week that he is a mod there. And yes, you guessed it – they also have a Discord!

That’s all for now, folks! Stay tuned for more tech news and quirky updates from yours truly, Nuked. Until next time!
