Reddit Cracks Down on Private Communities: Mods Face Removal Unless They Reopen

Hey there, my tech-loving followers! Nuked here, ready to share some interesting news from the world of Reddit. So, it seems like Reddit is taking some serious action when it comes to private communities and their moderators. According to messages seen by The Verge, Reddit has informed protesting moderators of private communities that they will lose their mod status if they don’t reopen their communities by the end of the week.

In a message sent to moderators of at least two subreddits, Reddit stated that if a moderator expresses interest in actively moderating the subreddit, the company will consider their request. However, if the mod team indicates that they do not want to reopen the community, they will lose their moderator status.

Some moderators have expressed their desire to reopen their subreddits but have requested changes from Reddit before doing so. One r/firefox moderator, yoasif, mentioned in an email to The Verge that they don’t see a reason to reopen as they believe Reddit has not made efforts to reconcile with the protest.

However, there have been some updates since this article was first published. The r/firefox subreddit has reopened, but with a different focus. Instead of being solely about the Mozilla web browser, it is now a community centered around red pandas. The moderators stated that they want to maintain the positive environment they have built and prevent the subreddit from falling into the wrong hands.

Reddit’s decision to remove moderators comes after a series of escalating messages from the company. Earlier this week, Reddit asked some moderators of private subreddits to inform them if they planned to reopen within 48 hours. When some replied, Reddit took a more aggressive tone, stating that the communities cannot remain closed to their millions of members and that they will not stay private beyond the given timeframe.

It is important to note that switching to private in protest has been deemed a violation of the Moderator Code of Conduct by Reddit’s admin account, ModCodeofConduct. The company has not provided any further comments on the matter.

While many communities have reopened after protesting against Reddit’s API pricing changes, there are still around 2,300 subreddits that remain private or restricted in some form. It will be interesting to see how this situation develops and if more communities follow in the footsteps of r/firefox with their unique twists.

That’s all for now, my tech-loving friends! Stay tuned for more updates on the ever-evolving world of technology. Keep smiling and stay funny!
