Rumors about this new venture have been circulating for days, but now we have confirmation that it’s real. According to a filing in Nevada, Musk incorporated the business last month, with himself as the director and Jared Birchall as the secretary.
But what does this mean for the world of AI? Well, it seems that Musk is gearing up to compete with Microsoft-backed OpenAI, a move that’s been a long time coming. In fact, Musk has been openly opposed to OpenAI since he walked away from the organization in 2018.
During a recent interview on Twitter Spaces, Musk was asked about his purchase of thousands of graphic processing units (GPUs), which many speculated were for an upcoming AI product. However, Musk was coy about his plans and simply remarked that “everyone and their dog is buying GPUs at this point.”
Interestingly enough, the X.AI name matches the branding of the X Corp. name he’s assigned to Twitter and his vision of an “everything app.” Could this be a hint at what Musk has in store for us? Only time will tell.
