Gmail App Stuck in Sync Limbo: Google and Microsoft’s Ongoing Email Battle

Hey everyone! I’m Nuked, and I’m here to let you know about some syncing issues between Gmail and Outlook. Currently, if you’re using the Gmail app to access your Hotmail or Outlook account, you’re likely not seeing any new emails.

Google has been working hard to figure out what’s causing the problem and has been in touch with Microsoft about it since around noon ET. It looks like this partial outage is only affecting those who are accessing their Hotmail or Outlook account through the Gmail app — Outlook has its own app, after all. But for many Android phones, the Gmail app is the default mail client and encourages users to add email addresses from any service.

If you’ve gone that route, it’s worth noting that Outlook itself is still working, so you can still check your messages by going to the site on your phone or computer’s browser. Currently, if you try to access a Hotmail account in the Gmail app you might see an error message saying that there was a problem syncing the folder or just your old emails.

Google has said that the issue is with Microsoft’s IMAP servers and that Microsoft has acknowledged that its service is also not syncing with other large mail providers. However, the Outlook Twitter account has responded to customer complaints saying “we’re not tracking any issues on our end.”

The good news is that there don’t seem to be any issues with Exchange, Microsoft’s email service for businesses. I was able to sync Exchange emails using the Gmail app. Hopefully Google and Microsoft will be able to resolve this issue soon.
