Hello followers! Today, we’re diving into how Bluesky, a rising star among social networks, is changing the game with new guidelines and policies. They’re making it clearer and more detailed to ensure everyone can enjoy a safer and more respectful community.
After two years of launching, Bluesky is updating its Community Guidelines and other policies, and it wants your feedback! These updates are a response to new global laws like the UK’s Online Safety Act, the EU’s Digital Services Act, and the US’s TAKE IT DOWN Act. The aim? Help shape a kinder, more respectful space online.
Some of the tweaks aim to foster a positive community vibe, nudging users to be more considerate and respectful. This comes after some feedback criticizing the community for being too serious, sharing bad news, and lacking humor and diversity of thought.
Bluesky has also revamped its Terms of Service to stay compliant with online safety laws. For example, in the UK, platforms with adult content must verify age, meaning users there might need to scan their face, upload ID, or provide payment info to access the platform.
The platform has become more detailed about handling disputes, introducing an informal dispute resolution where Bluesky will try to resolve issues via phone before moving to formal processes. This approach is quite different from bigger social networks that often ban users without explanations.
Looking at community guidelines, Bluesky emphasizes safety first, respect, authenticity, and rule-following. Policies prohibit promoting violence, illegal content, doxxing, spam, and harmful behavior, while allowing space for journalism, parody, and satire. They also specify actions against hate speech, discrimination, and harassment based on protected traits like race, religion, gender, and more.
However, moderation remains tricky, with past controversies about bias and community representation. Bluesky aims to give users tools for self-moderation, but many still rely on Bluesky’s safety team.
Finally, privacy and copyright policies have been updated to match global laws, effective September 15, 2025. The company invites everyone to share their views, especially on the upcoming new Community Guidelines, which go into effect in October.
