Social Media Platform Trends: X and Threads Face-Off After Leadership Changes

Picture

Hey there, tech lovers! Today we’re diving into the ongoing battle between social media giants X and Threads, especially after the recent CEO shuffle at X. Let’s see what’s happening!

Following Linda Yaccarino’s departure as CEO of X, the platform that once defined text-heavy social networking is feeling the heat. The data from Sensor Tower reveals a 10% drop in daily active users in Q2 2025. Despite still having a bigger user base—65% larger than Meta’s Threads and ten times bigger than Bluesky—the future isn’t guaranteed for X in this space.

Meanwhile, Threads is gaining momentum, especially on mobile. Recent figures from Similarweb show Threads’ mobile app attracting nearly as many daily users as X — 115.1 million for Threads versus 132 million for X in June 2025. That’s impressive growth, with Threads increasing 128% year-over-year, compared to X’s 15% decline.

Though X still has the upper hand detail-wise, Threads isn’t backing down. Its global daily active users are up a staggering 160% over the past year. This surge is fueled by new features, integration with Facebook and Instagram, and a focused push into advertising, which now includes video ads. Meta is leveraging its two-decade ad experience to boost Threads’ monetization.

On the engagement front, X users spend an average of 31 minutes daily, far more than the 8 minutes on Threads. Yet, more users are turning to Threads daily: nearly half of X’s monthly users engage daily, while only a third of Threads’ do. That shows X’s current dominance, but the rapid growth of Threads hints at a strong challenger in the making, especially with their expanding ad ecosystem.

In the long run, both platforms have their strengths. X’s web presence is still larger, but Threads’ growth, especially tied to Meta’s ad ecosystem, might shake things up. As the social media scene continues shifting, one thing is clear: this rivalry isn’t over yet!
