Recently, the U.S. Justice Department announced the arrest of Xu Zewei, a Chinese national accused of being a prolific hacker working for the Chinese government. He was caught in Italy at the request of U.S. authorities.
Xu Zewei is charged with several serious crimes, including hacking into U.S. universities to steal valuable COVID-19 research back in February 2020. He allegedly worked for Shanghai Powerock Network, a firm linked to the Chinese government, known for carrying out cyberattacks for their nation-state.
Furthermore, Xu and another suspect, Zhang Yu, who remains on the run, are charged with hacking hundreds of Microsoft Exchange servers starting in March 2021. These breaches, carried out by the group called Hafnium, compromised over 60,000 servers, mostly from small businesses across the U.S., leading to widespread theft of private data.
The hackers didn’t stop there. They launched a new campaign called Silk Typhoon, targeting large corporations and government entities, showing how persistent and dangerous these cyber threats are in today’s digital landscape.
