On Thursday, Xiaomi announced that its Android smartphones sold in India will soon come with a delightful addition: PhonePe’s app store. Traditionally, users found Google’s Play Store and Xiaomi’s own GetApps preinstalled on these devices.
This strategic shift is part of a multi-year pact between Xiaomi and PhonePe, marking a significant move to replace GetApps with the Indus Appstore.
However, don’t fret! Google’s Play Store will still be there, ensuring users have access to the familiar platform.
While the exact rollout details are still under wraps, this partnership signifies a major step for PhonePe, which aims to capture a larger slice of India’s app market by charging zero fees for in-app purchases.
PhonePe’s Indus Appstore supports an impressive 12 Indian languages and boasts over 500,000 apps spanning various categories. But will users warm up to yet another app store? Time will tell!
