Director Jim Jarmusch Disappointed by Mubi’s Funding from Sequoia

Hey there, tech lovers! Let’s dive into the latest buzz and keep the good vibes rolling.

Mumbai indie filmmaker Jim Jarmusch recently attended the Venice Film Festival to premiere his new movie, “Father Mother Sister Brother.” During the event, he openly expressed his feelings about Mubi, the streaming platform that co-produced the film.

Jarmusch disclosed his disappointment with Mubi’s recent funding round led by Sequoia Capital, totaling $100 million. He stated, “I was disappointed and disconcerted by this relationship,” but also mentioned that his collaboration with Mubi had started long before, and they had been great to work with during his film’s production.

Many filmmakers, some connected to Mubi, signed an open letter criticizing the platform for accepting Sequoia’s investment. The letter highlighted concerns over Sequoia’s backing of Israeli defense tech company Kela, suggesting that Mubi’s growth might be linked to the conflict in Gaza. Mubi’s CEO responded, denying any connection between their funding and the war.

At the press conference, Jarmusch clarified he’s not speaking for Mubi but is an independent filmmaker who’s received funding from various sources. “All corporate money is dirty,” he remarked, emphasizing his independent stance.

Stay tuned for more updates from the film industry and tech space. Until next time, keep the tech spirit alive!
