Reliance Industries’ chairman Mukesh Ambani announced an exciting plan at the company’s annual meeting: to develop India’s AI backbone through a new subsidiary, Reliance Intelligence. This venture aims to build a nationwide AI infrastructure, offering advanced tools and services across various sectors. India is eager to catch up in the global AI race, traditionally dominated by the US and China.
To kickstart this ambitious project, Reliance has teamed up with Google Cloud, one of its main technology partners. They will develop a dedicated AI cloud infrastructure in India, starting with a major data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat. This infrastructure will power AI services for businesses, developers, and government agencies, leveraging Jio’s network and energy resources for large-scale projects. Google CEO Sundar Pichai even shared his excitement, calling it only the beginning of their AI collaboration.
In addition, Reliance has formed a joint venture with Meta (formerly Facebook) to create enterprise AI solutions for India and other markets. This partnership involves a significant investment of about $100 million, with Reliance and Meta holding a 70:30 stake. They plan to offer Meta’s Llama-based AI platform as a service, enabling companies to deploy and customize generative AI models for various business needs, from marketing to finance.
Ambani also disclosed plans for Reliance Jio to expand internationally and seek an IPO in the first half of 2026. Rumors of a partnership with OpenAI are also circulating, possibly announced when OpenAI’s founder Sam Altman visits India soon. Reliance’s competitors, like Bharti Airtel, are also stepping up their AI game by partnering with firms like Perplexity.
Reliance’s collaborations extend further, including partnerships with Microsoft via Azure and consumer cloud services like JioAICloud, which has a huge user base and AI-powered features such as voice assistants and content translation. The company is even showcasing AI-enhanced gadgets like smart glasses and integrating AI into its streaming platform, JioHotstar, to attract millions of viewers.
All these moves underscore India’s rapid advancement in AI, with Reliance positioning itself as a key player. The future looks bright for India’s tech ecosystem as it embraces AI innovation, powered by global giants and local giants alike.
