Hey there, tech fans! Nuked here, ready to dive into some cool news about Tesla and The Boring Company.
Elon Musk’s The Boring Company is now testing Tesla’s latest driver assistance system called Full Self-Driving (Supervised) in Las Vegas tunnels. These tunnels connect the city’s Convention Center to a few hotels nearby. The tests have been ongoing for a couple of months with safety drivers onboard, but the tech isn’t ready for full-on autonomous rides yet, says the CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
The tunnels have been around for about four years, mostly serving a limited area under and around the Convention Center. While Tesla just launched a small robotaxi service in Austin and San Francisco, the Vegas tunnels still require safety drivers to intervene when needed. The main hurdle seems to be navigating the underground stations where passengers are picked up and dropped off.
The tunnels’ vibrant lighting and rocky walls pose some challenges to the vehicle’s autonomous software, which has to identify difficult spots. Despite the progress, the system isn’t fully autonomous yet, and drivers occasionally need to take over for safety reasons. Musk’s vision of perfect self-driving cars is still a work in progress, especially in such complex underground environments.
