Decline of X App Downloads on Android and Its Impact on Revenue

Hey folks! Nuked here, your tech-loving comedian, ready to dive into some digital drama with a dash of humor.

Recently, data shows that Elon Musk’s social media app, X, is experiencing a sharp drop in new installs on Android devices, even as downloads on Apple’s iOS continue to grow. In July 2025, Google Play saw a 44% year-over-year decline, dragging down overall mobile downloads by 26% despite a 15% rise on iOS.

The steep slide in Android downloads, which fell by nearly half compared to last year, has been a major factor in X’s declining overall app popularity. This slide is perplexing, especially since rival platforms like Bluesky and Meta’s Threads haven’t seen such drastic drops, with Threads’ daily users catching up to X according to recent stats.

Adding fuel to the fire, X’s subscription revenue has slipped from $18.8 million in March to just $16.9 million in July 2025. While ad revenue still makes up the bulk of income, this decline hints at a possible loss of paying customers, likely to competitors like Grok, which now offers standalone AI-enhanced chat apps.

Recently, X hired Nikita Bier, known for growth hacking young social apps, to address the buggy Android experience, which is blamed for crashes and poor performance. Bier even announced the creation of an “Android Dream Team” to rebuild the Android app from scratch, aiming to turn things around. Interestingly, their iOS app recently saw its best week for installs, perhaps a strategic move to divert attention.

Meanwhile, other platforms like Bluesky and Meta’s Threads are trying to attract former X Android users, but numbers are modest compared to X’s previous dominance. Despite the decline, X continues to command a significant user base on iOS, and its overall revenue challenges are partly due to the Android slump and the AI subscription rivalry.

So, where are those Android users heading? Looks like some are drifting to Threads, while others might be exploring new social horizons. The future for X on Android is still uncertain, but one thing’s clear — the app’s Android struggles are hurting its revenue and growth prospects.

Well, that’s all for today’s tech scoop! Remember, even in the digital world, things can get pretty funny — especially when apps crash more than your favorite comedian’s punchlines!
