Hello followers! Are you ready for some electrifying news? Ford is gearing up to reveal its upcoming low-cost electric vehicles at an event in Kentucky on August 11. The company’s CEO, Jim Farley, has called this development a “Model T moment” — big words for a bold move into affordable EV territory.
Despite recent financial setbacks, including a $1.3 billion loss in Ford’s electric vehicle division, the automaker is not backing down. Sales of popular models like the F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E are declining, especially under the challenging landscape shaped by the current political climate.
Ford first hinted at a project to develop an affordable EV back in February 2024, led by ex-Tesla executive Alan Clarke. The project team includes talented individuals from Tesla, Rivian, Apple, and Lucid Motors, all working on a new platform that aims to produce several vehicle styles — from trucks to commercial vehicles — featuring personalized digital experiences. The first vehicle on this platform will be a mid-size pickup, scheduled for release in 2027.
The strategy is clear: offering cheaper electric options could significantly boost Ford’s market share. While no mass-market EV priced under $30,000 currently exists in the U.S., Ford’s new models are set to change that. Likewise, Tesla plans a stripped-down Model Y, GM is bringing back the Chevrolet Bolt, and startup Slate Auto is aiming to launch a low-cost EV pickup as early as late 2026.
All eyes are on Ford’s next moves, especially after CEO Farley described the initiative as a “Model T moment,” emphasizing its potential to democratize electric vehicle ownership. The 2027 launch is a long wait, but it might just be worth it for those looking for affordable electric ride options in the near future.
