In April, hackers managed to steal personal details of all Co-op customers, totaling 6.5 million members. The retailer’s CEO, Shirine Khoury-Haq, revealed that the hackers copied the company’s member list before the company could shut down its network to prevent ransomware locking the systems. The stolen data includes names, addresses, and contact info.

This breach caused big disruptions in Co-op’s UK operations, hitting back offices and grocery stores alike. It was part of a larger wave targeting UK shops, with similar cyberattacks on Marks & Spencer and attempted hits on Harrods.

The hacking group behind this, known as Scattered Spider, uses trickery to fool IT helpdesks into giving them access. They’re mostly young hackers, and authorities recently arrested four individuals connected to these cybercrimes, including a teenage suspect.

Since the attack, these hackers shifted focus to sectors like airlines and insurance companies, which hold countless customer records. Unfortunately for Co-op, they didn’t have cybersecurity insurance at the time, hinting at hefty future costs.
