Lucid Motors is gearing up to launch a new software update on July 30 that enables hands-free highway driving in its luxury Air sedans. This update marks a big step forward for their advanced driver assistance tech, placing Lucid among the few U.S. companies offering such features.
The update will be available only to cars equipped with the $2,500 “Dream Drive Pro” package, which includes an array of 32 sensors like lidar, radar, and cameras. Currently, only the Air sedans will get this feature, with plans to extend it to the Gravity SUV later this year, though deliveries for the SUV are still limited.
Drivers will need to stay alert, as the system requires continuous attention, much like other modern driver assistance systems. It will operate on specific divided highways and uses a camera-based system mounted on the steering column to monitor the driver and surroundings.
Lucid’s move aligns them with systems like Ford’s BlueCruise, GM’s Super Cruise, and Mercedes-Benz’s Drive Pilot. Tesla’s Full Self-Driving can also be used hands-free under certain conditions. However, this new update will make Lucid the newest contender to offer true hands-free highway driving in the U.S.
The company hasn’t disclosed exactly how many owners have purchased the Dream Drive Pro package yet. Since starting to deliver vehicles in 2021, Lucid has rolled out approximately 20,000 cars. The system’s deployment requires the driver to be ready to take control at any moment.
