Electric Vehicle Sales Update: GM Outpaces Rivals in the U.S.

Hey everyone, Nuked here! Let’s dive into some electrifying news about EVs and the big players in the game.

General Motors has sold 4,508 electric Hummer trucks and SUVs in the U.S. during the second quarter, nearly matching Ford’s F-150 Lightning sales despite a hefty price difference. This quarter was a hit for GM’s EV lineup, which surprisingly experienced a solid year-over-year bump in U.S. sales, unlike many competitors.

GM also moved significant numbers of other models, including 17,420 electric Equinox SUVs, 3,056 Silverado pickups, and more. Their commercial division BrightDrop sold over a thousand electric vans, contributing to an overall 111% sales increase this quarter. This rise is partly because many of these models were new or not available last year.

In stark contrast, Ford’s EV sales dipped by 31% in the same period, especially with big drops in E-Transit vans and F-150 Lightnings. Despite overall sales rising, Ford’s EVs have slowed down, with just 38,988 units sold halfway through the year—down nearly 12% from 2024. Hyundai and Kia also faced declines, with their EV sales falling by 12% and 8% respectively.

Tesla’s upcoming quarterly results are expected to show similar struggles. Ford’s Mustang Mach-E sales decreased by about 20%, and F-150 Lightning sales fell by over a quarter. Many of Ford’s fleet vehicles, like the E-Transit, saw sharp declines, likely due to large early-year orders.

Overall, the U.S. EV market faces hurdles with potential policy changes threatening federal incentives, which may hamper growth. GM’s success highlights how some automakers are navigating these challenges better than others in this evolving landscape.
