At the ISTE edtech conference, Google unveiled over 30 new AI tools tailored for teachers. These include a special version of the Gemini app designed for classrooms, along with expanded features for Google Vids, their collaborative video creation platform. With these updates, the company aims to boost AI use in education, where students are increasingly turning to chatbots like ChatGPT for homework help. Schools are also debating how to detect AI-generated content and keep academic integrity intact.
Google is betting big on responsible AI, believing it can create more engaging and personalized learning experiences when combined with human teaching. The Gemini AI suite is now free for all Google Workspace for Education accounts and offers features like idea brainstorming, lesson planning, and content personalization. Teachers can also develop custom AI versions called “Gems” to give students extra help or deeper understanding, utilizing AI trained specifically on their classroom materials.
Additionally, educators will soon be able to provide real-time support with AI-powered reading assistants through tools like Read Along and create instructional videos using Google Vids. These videos can serve multiple purposes, from explaining concepts to student assignments. Google is also introducing new features to monitor student progress, secure data, and manage access to AI tools, alongside new classroom modes that allow teachers to share content directly and keep students focused by restricting browsing to relevant tabs.
All these innovations aim to foster more dynamic educational environments, where AI supports learning without replacing the human element. Google’s efforts reflect a broader push to adapt to the AI era, helping both students and teachers thrive amid rapid technological change.
