Startups focused on voice AI are getting a lot of attention lately. Companies like ElevenLabs and Cartesia have raised big bucks, and apps like Granola, Read AI, and Fireflies AI are catching the investor’s eye. Among these innovators, Wispr Flow is making a splash after raising $30 million from Menlo Ventures, with support from other big names. This startup has already gathered $56 million so far.
Founded by Tanay Kothari, Wispr initially aimed to create a device that lets users type just by mouthing words silently. After some success with their hardware, they shifted focus to the software interface, launching a Mac app in October 2024, followed by Windows and iOS versions. Silicon Valley VCs are already using their product daily for emails, memos, and documents, which has sparked a lot of interest in investment circles.
Kothari shared that the startup expects to turn profitable soon thanks to their rapid growth. Though he initially hesitated to seek funding, he saw the potential risks posed by massive tech giants and decided that raising capital would accelerate his company’s revenue and reach.
Menlo Ventures’ Matt Kraning highlighted that Wispr Flow captures users’ speech efficiently, translating thoughts into actions without the frustration of traditional input methods. He emphasized that the app’s design considers how people naturally speak, making it a game-changer for digital communication.
The app is growing fast, with 50% month-over-month user expansion. Users are spread across the U.S., Europe, and other regions, with a significant portion coming from non-technical backgrounds. It currently supports dictation in 104 languages, primarily English, Spanish, French, German, Dutch, Hindi, and Mandarin.
Looking ahead, Wispr plans to grow its team to 18 employees, develop an Android version, and tailor their tools for enterprise use. They’re also working to turn Flow into a versatile AI assistant capable of understanding personal context, helping with messages, notes, reminders, and more. Collaborations with hardware partners are also in the works to enhance interactions further.
