The proposed changes are part of the new Digital Markets Competition Regime, which came into effect earlier this year. This regime might label Google as a ‘strategic market player,’ pushing the company to follow stricter rules. These include providing choice screens so users can pick between different search services, ensuring search results are ranked fairly, and giving publishers better control over their content data.

Furthermore, the UK regulator wants users to have easier data transfer options, like moving their search history seamlessly. The goal? Lower costs for businesses, more options for consumers, and greater innovation across the UK’s tech landscape.

The CMA, or Competition and Markets Authority, is gathering feedback from industry leaders before making a final decision by October 13. While Google hasn’t commented yet, the move aims to boost competition and consumer rights in digital search services.
