Controversy Over Apple Wallet Ads Promoting F1 Movie

Hey everyone, Nuked here—let’s dive into the latest in tech news! Apple has stirred up some chatter with an unexpected move in their Wallet app.

iPhone users are claiming that their digital Wallet received a push notification offering a $10 discount at Fandango for buying tickets to the new F1 film, “F1: The Movie.” The film stars Brad Pitt, immerses viewers in the world of Formula 1, and features real Grand Prix footage. It even showcases Apple tech, including custom iPhone-made cameras used during filming and AirPods Max worn by a driver character.

Despite the critics liking the movie, many Apple fans aren’t thrilled about being marketed to in their personal apps. Social media and forums are flooded with complaints, with some users saying they didn’t pay over a thousand dollars for an iPhone just to get ads shoved at them.

Interestingly, in the beta of iOS 26, Apple introduced a new option to turn off “Offers & Promotions” in Wallet, but the current release doesn’t offer this feature. Instead, users can only disable notifications or hide card benefits at checkout, meaning they can’t opt out of promotional offers outright. This hints that Apple plans to push more marketing messages in the future, which isn’t sitting well with many.

Historically, Apple customers have resisted intrusive advertising, recalling past missteps like the unsolicited U2 album in iTunes. Now, they’re once again voicing disapproval over these new tactics, comparing them to earlier marketing blunders. The launch of the F1 film was heavily promoted, including an Apple WWDC keynote featuring Tim Cook and Craig Federighi showing off racing scenes, all of which seem to have rubbed some users the wrong way.

Reddit and Twitter users are sharing their frustrations, emphasizing they didn’t sign up for marketing bombardment. The widespread dissatisfaction indicates that even loyal Apple consumers prefer control over what ads appear on their devices.
