Hey there, tech lovers! Today, let’s dive into the fascinating world of legal tech with some exciting news about Definely, the startup making contract reviewing a breeze.

Back in 2017, Nnamdi Emelifeonwu, a curious innovator, teamed up with Feargus MacDaeid, one of the rare blind lawyers in the UK, to create Definely. They wanted to solve a tough problem: navigating complex legal definitions without losing track. Their solution was an AI-powered platform designed to help lawyers review and edit contracts more easily.

Definely has developed a set of smart tools like Draft, which helps lawyers read through contracts smoothly; Vault, allowing quick clause insertion; Proof, an AI feature that checks for inconsistencies; and a PDF tool that extracts information from scanned documents. Recently, they launched ‘Enhance,’ an AI agent system that works with Microsoft Word, automating drafting, reviewing, and proofreading tasks to boost productivity.

Naming the fundraising process as “arduous,” Emelifeonwu highlighted how the company secured its latest funding round, a $30 million Series B, from European and North American investors including Revaia, Alumni Ventures, and Beacon Capital. Interestingly, they didn’t reach out to investors—instead, they attracted interest naturally, with Revaia’s lead investment being through an introduction.

This fresh capital will fuel their expansion into the U.S., where revenue already makes up 30%, and enable further AI development and hiring efforts. Emelifeonwu, a Nigerian immigrant, feels proud, seeing this milestone as both personal and inspiring for others, especially highlighting the importance of diverse founders breaking barriers.

As competition in legal tech heats up, companies like Luminance, Robin AI, and ContractPodAi are also innovating in this space. Emelifeonwu’s journey reflects a blend of personal passion and a desire to solve real legal challenges, with the goal of making legal work more accessible and efficient for everyone.
