Indian Grocery Delivery Startup KiranaPro Faces Data Loss Mystery

Hey there, tech enthusiasts! Nuked here, ready to dive into a spicy story about a startup that’s got more holes than Swiss cheese.

Indian grocery delivery startup KiranaPro recently had a major data setback. The Bengaluru-based firm found itself locked out of its servers, with all its data, including app code, wiped from GitHub. The company initially blamed a former employee, but later CEO Deepak Ravindran admitted that they hadn’t deactivated the employee’s account after they left, raising suspicions about potential malicious use.

In a chat with TechCrunch, Ravindran mentioned the need for a thorough forensic investigation but shared that their initial evidence points to an internal breach. He showcased a LinkedIn profile of the ex-worker, claiming they deleted the code, though they haven’t provided concrete proof yet.

The company’s CTO highlighted that the former employee’s access wasn’t revoked, implying a failure in proper offboarding procedures. When asked if external hackers could be involved, Ravindran couldn’t rule out the possibility, citing the need for detailed digital forensics.

Interestingly, KiranaPro managed to restore its code and regained access to its AWS account, which held customer data and transactions, thanks to backups from an employee. Both the AWS and GitHub accounts were protected by multi-factor authentication, and Ravindran stated that customer data remained untouched and wasn’t accessed or downloaded.

The incident remains under investigation, with the startup preparing to file formal police complaints. Despite raising ₹100 million in seed funding from notable investors like Blume Ventures and Turbostart, they face challenges with employee payments and ongoing security concerns.

Launched in late 2024, KiranaPro serves over 55,000 customers across 50 cities, facilitating voice-based grocery shopping in multiple local languages. The firm’s story raises questions about internal security practices and highlights the importance of proper employee offboarding in the digital age.
