Browser Security Update: Chrome Will No Longer Trust Certificates from Two Authorities

Hello followers! Today, we’re diving into some tech news that’s as surprising as finding a hidden feature in your old gadget.

Google’s Chrome browser is making a bold move by discontinuing trust in two certificate authorities, Chunghwa Telecom from Taiwan and Netlock from Budapest. This happens because these organizations showed patterns of concerning behavior over the past year, shaking the confidence in their ability to ensure secure web browsing.

These certifiers play a crucial role—they issue digital certificates that encrypt traffic and verify website identities, giving us that reassuring padlock in the address bar. When these authorities falter, it puts the entire web’s security at risk.

The Chrome security team explained that ongoing failures include not disclosing intermediate CA certificates, delays in revoking misissued certificates, and failure to provide timely security incident updates. Because of these issues, Chrome will stop trusting all certificates issued by Chunghwa Telecom and Netlock after July 31. Starting August 1, any sites relying on certificates from them will trigger error messages in Chrome, urging users to be cautious.

Interestingly, history shows that such distrust events occur roughly every 15 months, often due to compliance failures or security lapses, according to expert Ryan Hurst. Past incidents from these authorities involved delayed revocations, misissuance, and lack of transparency about security issues.

Both organizations have yet to respond to requests for comments, but users should prepare for potential disruptions as they transition to new certificate authorities to ensure safe browsing.

So, in the world of web security, trust is everything—once broken, it takes effort to rebuild. Stay tuned for more updates in the tech universe!
