Leading the charge, the NAACP has called for local Memphis officials to shut down xAI’s controversial supercomputer, nicknamed Colossus. This facility, operated by Elon Musk’s xAI in South Memphis, has raised serious health and environmental concerns.
The civil rights group sent a stern letter to the Shelby County Health Department and Memphis Light Gas and Water. They criticized the organizations for allegedly turning a blind eye to the pollution produced by the data center, especially the gas turbines it uses for power.
The turbines emit hazardous pollutants like formaldehyde and nitrogen oxides, with levels that reportedly surpass EPA safety limits. Despite applying for a permit to keep operating 15 turbines, records reveal xAI has been operating more turbines without proper permits for over a year. Meanwhile, the NAACP is demanding an emergency order to cease all operations until these issues are addressed.
