The bill mandates online platforms and social media giants to delete flagged content within 48 hours of a victim notifying them. They also need to remove duplicates and prevent re-sharing. Some states have already banned revenge porn and deepfake content, but this law marks the first effort at the federal level to regulate internet companies’ handling of such material.

Notably, First Lady Melania Trump pushed for the legislation, which was sponsored by Senators Ted Cruz and Amy Klobuchar. Cruz was motivated after Snapchat allegedly refused to take down a deepfake of a minor for nearly a year. While many applaud the move, digital rights advocates warn the law might be too broad, potentially censoring legitimate images, like legal pornography, or criticizing the government.
