Waymo, the innovative self-driving car company, recently issued a recall for 1,200 of its robotaxis. This move came after some vehicles were involved in minor crashes with gates, chains, and other roadside objects. The updates aimed to fix this issue, and the recall was based on a software update launched late last year.
In the past, Waymo’s fleet faced several incidents, including collisions with stationary barriers like gates. The company had already rolled out software improvements to reduce such accidents. Currently, they operate about 1,500 robotaxis across major cities such as Austin, LA, Phoenix, and San Francisco, actively working on safety enhancements.
Interestingly, NHTSA, the regulatory authority, started examining Waymo’s system back in May after discovering seven incidents of contact between robotaxis and roadside obstacles. None of these caused injuries. Previously, Waymo also recalled other vehicles—like their Jaguar I-Pace robotaxis and some that crashed into towed trucks—highlighting ongoing safety concerns.
Despite these setbacks, Waymo continues to innovate and expand. They regularly update their software to improve safety and aim for smoother autonomous driving experiences. The company’s progress reflects a journey filled with challenges but also remarkable advancements.
