OpenAI has just rolled out a new feature that connects ChatGPT’s deep research capabilities directly to GitHub. This means developers can now ask ChatGPT questions about their codebases and technical documents, making coding and debugging faster and smarter.
The new GitHub connector is currently in beta and will be available for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users soon, with Enterprise and Educational versions coming shortly. This addition helps users break down product specifications, analyze code structure, and even understand how to implement new APIs using real code snippets.
While AI hallucinations are a concern, OpenAI emphasizes that the tool respects organization security settings, showing only content users are authorized to access. The goal is to save time and boost productivity, not to replace expert knowledge.
This development aligns with broader efforts from AI companies to link their chatbots with external platforms, like Anthropic’s app integrations or OpenAI’s earlier plug-in capabilities. OpenAI’s Head of Business Products, Nate Gonzalez, explained that many users want their AI to access internal sources, prompting this first-ever GitHub connector for deep research.
