OpenAI has announced a fresh program designed to boost AI development in various countries. The initiative, called “OpenAI for Countries,” aims to build local AI infrastructure to better serve international users. The company plans to work closely with governments to grow data center capacities and adapt their products, like ChatGPT, to local languages and needs.
This effort is part of a larger strategy to promote democratic AI — meaning they want more countries to adopt Western AI models, especially OpenAI’s, instead of competitors from other regions like China. The program will start with around ten international projects, although the specific locations haven’t been revealed yet.
Funding will come from both OpenAI and participating governments, fostering a collaborative push for AI growth. Interestingly, this initiative complements OpenAI’s earlier efforts with Project Stargate, which focused on expanding AI infrastructure beyond the US, possibly through Stargate’s international data centers or investor backing.
OpenAI hopes these efforts will encourage countries to leverage Western AI technology, maintaining influence and promoting a democratic approach to AI development worldwide.
