Nintendo Switch’s New Sharing Rules: What You Need to Know

Hey there, fellow tech lovers! Nuked here, ready to spill the beans on Nintendo’s latest game-sharing shake-up. Grab your Switch and let’s dive in!

Nintendo is rolling out a fresh system update for the original Switch ahead of the much-anticipated Switch 2 launch. This update introduces the Virtual Game Card system, which changes how you share digital games across multiple Switch consoles.

Previously, you could share a digital game and even play it on two consoles simultaneously if one was a “secondary” console with an internet connection. That’s now a thing of the past. The new system no longer allows two Switches to play the same digital game at the same time, which is a big shift from the freedom players once enjoyed.

With the Virtual Game Card, you can transfer a game license from one Switch to another, but only one console gets to play the game at a time. There’s also an Online License feature for sharing games across multiple systems without the virtual card being loaded, but simultaneous play on two consoles is blocked.

There’s a workaround, though! If your primary Switch with the Virtual Game Card is set to airplane mode (offline) and the Online License feature is active on a second console, both can technically play the game simultaneously. The catch? One system has to go completely offline, so forget about online multiplayer with just one game copy.

This update seems aimed at closing a loophole in Nintendo’s digital sharing system and making sure each player owns their own copy when gaming together online. With some games now priced around $80, households with multiple Switch users might need to shell out more to keep everyone happy.

So if you’re planning to share or game online with family or friends, keep these new limits in mind. Nintendo’s making sharing a bit less free-wheeling, but hey, the future Switch 2 is right around the corner!
