When AI Code Gets Too Creative: The Threat of Phantom Packages

AI models, especially the large language kinds used to whip up code, sometimes make stuff up. Not just small facts, but whole package dependencies that don’t actually exist. Why does that matter? Because developers rely on these little packages like building blocks to save time and effort. If those building blocks are imaginary, things can go sideways fast.

This phenomenon, dubbed “package hallucination,” has been studied recently with some eye-opening results. Researchers fed 16 popular AI models nearly 600,000 code snippets and found out about 19.7% of the package references were totally fake! That’s a huge chunk when you think about how much code AI is expected to generate going forward.

These fake packages aren’t just harmless glitches; they open the door to what’s called supply-chain attacks. Attackers can sneak in malicious code by publishing a bogus package with a familiar name and a newer version than the real one. Software that trusts the AI’s suggestions might grab the wrong package and unwittingly invite hackers in. Yikes!

Interestingly, open-source AI models were the biggest culprits, hallucinating far more than their commercial counterparts. JavaScript also showed more of these phantom packages than Python, possibly because JavaScript’s package world is way bigger and messier, making it harder for AI to keep track.

What’s especially tricky is that many hallucinated package names pop up again and again instead of being random errors. This makes it easier for bad actors to exploit the pattern by creating malicious versions under those catchy fake names and waiting for developers to take the bait.

So what does this all mean? With predictions that AI will generate 95% of code in the next few years, trusting AI blindly is risky business. As developers, being cautious about verifying packages and not trusting every AI suggestion can save us from a digital disaster. Keep those eyes sharp, folks!
