Hey everyone, Nuked here! Today, we’re diving into the story of Whisky, a popular Mac gaming tool, calling it quits. Let’s see what happened and what it means for Mac gamers.
Whisky was a handy front-end for Wine, enabling Windows games to run smoothly on Mac. For years, it was a favorite among gamers for its simplicity and effectiveness.
However, the developer, Isaac Marovitz, an 18-year-old college student from Northeastern University, announced that Whisky will no longer be updated. He shared that balancing school and development was tough, and the project had been in a sort of standby for a few months.
Marovitz, who previously worked on projects like the Switch emulator Ryujinx and PlayCover, explained that Whisky has not contributed much to the Wine community, and supporting it actively could threaten the viability of CrossOver, a paid alternative supported by CodeWeavers. He suggested users support CrossOver instead, emphasizing the limited pool of skilled developers on macOS.
In a heartfelt note, the Whisky project’s homepage now shows a warning that it’s no longer maintained and that apps may stop working without notice. CodeWeavers’ CEO also acknowledged Isaac’s efforts but pointed out that the resources required for support are significant, and continued development depends on the sustainability of products like CrossOver.
Despite stepping back, Marovitz isn’t leaving Mac gaming altogether. Currently, he’s working on bringing Sonic Unleashed fully to Mac, continuing his passion for the gaming ecosystem and innovation.
While Whisky’s journey ends, it brought attention to the potential of Wine and related tools like Apple’s Game Porting Toolkit—showing that Mac gaming is still very much alive and evolving.
