Recently, the government replaced the covid.gov site, which used to inform us about COVID-19 vaccines and testing, with a new website that endorses the unproven lab leak theory. This new site suggests that COVID-19 possibly originated from a laboratory in China, a claim heavily debated and opposed by many virologists.
The old site now redirects to the White House’s page explaining this lab leak hypothesis, which was featured in a report by House Republicans. Interestingly, the covidtests.gov page, previously used to order free tests, also now points to this new site.
Adding to the controversy, the White House’s new webpage spreads medical misinformation, claiming ineffective measures like masks and social distancing don’t help curb the virus. Yet, numerous scientific studies prove otherwise, showing such methods do reduce transmission of COVID-19 and similar respiratory illnesses.
Furthermore, since President Trump resumed his role, many government websites have been altered to fit his administration’s narrative. A notable example includes efforts to erase words related to diversity, such as “Black,” “disability,” and “gender,” along with removing mentions of climate change from environmental sites.
All these changes reflect a broader trend of governmental information being shaped to match current political agendas, often skewing scientific consensus and public health guidance.
