Google has made a fantastic proclamation, announcing the addition of 10 megawatts of geothermal energy to its renewable energy portfolio in Taiwan. This marks the tech giant’s inaugural geothermal project in Asia.
The undertaking is spearheaded by Swedish firm Baseload Capital, which has been diligently exploring Taiwan’s geothermal resources since 2019.
This isn’t Google’s first flirt with geothermal energy. Just last November, the company partnered with geothermal startup Fervo, connecting a 3.5-megawatt power plant to the grid to serve its Nevada data centers.
Geothermal energy holds immense potential for clean and consistent power, with projections suggesting it could provide up to 90 gigawatts in the U.S. by 2050.
Given its geographical position, Taiwan aspires to harness about 6 gigawatts of geothermal power by 2050, taking full advantage of the Earth’s natural heat.
